Exterior shutters (also known as louvered or Mediterranean shutters) protect joinery from sun and moisture, reinforce privacy and bring a characteristic Mediterranean look to the house. On the coast they have been a part of traditional architecture for decades, and today they are also produced in aluminum and PVC variants that preserve the look with minimal maintenance. When choosing, we consider the style of the house, the orientation of the opening and the opening method that fits the space.
Shutters shield the window from direct sun, wind and impacts.
Variants with adjustable louvers regulate light without closing.
ALU, PVC and wood — anthracite, white, brown, Mediterranean shades.
Partially closed shutters reduce heat transmission in summer.
Fixed, sliding, hinged and bi-fold — for every situation.
ALU and PVC last for decades with minimal maintenance.

Fixed shutters are stationary panels — mostly decorative or for permanent sun protection. They suit openings that do not require frequent opening, such as façade elements, pergolas or fixed sections of large openings.
Sliding shutters move along tracks (horizontally). They solve wider openings where there is no space for classic swinging sashes. They suit terraces and balcony doors.
Hinged shutters are the classic choice in French and Mediterranean styles. The leaves open to the side against the wall, as windows do. They give a traditional look and simple handling.
Bi-fold shutters fold the leaves to one side and solve large openings with minimal space when fully open. They are less common in standard residential use, more frequent in hotels and restaurants.
Aluminum exterior shutters are the most popular in Montenegro, especially on the coast. They do not warp from moisture and sun, come in a wide range of colors and last for decades without painting. Powder-coated or anodized finishes protect the surface from salt air.
Wooden exterior shutters give a warm, traditional appearance that has been part of Dalmatian and Mediterranean architecture for decades. They require periodic maintenance (varnishing every 5–7 years), but when well cared for they last longer than a generation.
PVC exterior shutters are the value alternative for inland properties and where minimal maintenance is a priority. They can mimic the look of wooden shutters through wood decor variants, with a solid polymer that requires no painting.
Shutters with adjustable louvers regulate the level of light and privacy without moving the entire leaf. A mechanism inside the leaf tilts the louvers — from fully open (maximum light) to fully closed (maximum privacy and shade).
They suit rooms where you want flexible light levels during the day, such as bedrooms and workspaces. The mechanism is chosen based on the material and louver dimensions, and its quality significantly affects long-term performance.
This is the same product under different regional names. 'Grilje' is common in Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia, while 'škure' is used more often in Croatia, especially in Dalmatia. Both terms describe protective panels with fixed or adjustable louvers, mounted over the window.
In everyday conversation both names are used — what matters is agreeing on the type (fixed, hinged, sliding, bi-fold), material and whether the louvers should be adjustable. The final specification is set in the quote.
Standard colors are anthracite, brown, white and black. For coastal houses, traditional Mediterranean shades are often chosen — blue, green, burgundy — coordinated with the façade. Wood decor variants give a warmer look combined with the practicality of ALU or PVC.
When choosing a color we consider the whole visual context — façade, roof, windows and other details. Shutters are a major visual element and often define the character of the entire façade, so they deserve the same attention as the joinery.
After measurement we discuss material, opening type, louvers and color. You receive a written quote with specifications. During installation we check bracket stability, hardware operation and final seating of the leaves.
When replacing existing shutters, we remove and dispose of the old ones at no cost. The warranty is 1 to 5 years, depending on material and mechanism — the exact duration is stated in the quote.
We confirm the availability of specific shades for the chosen system. Please verify the final color against a physical sample before ordering - on-screen rendering may differ from the actual color.
Call us or send an email with basic information about the property and the openings you want to replace. Photos help, but they do not replace precise on-site measurement.
We come to your address in Nikšić, Podgorica, the coast or anywhere in Montenegro. We discuss the choice and go through the details on site.
You receive the specification, price, timeline and warranty before any order is placed. Questions are welcome at this stage.
Lead time depends on the system and order size and is agreed in writing. Please prepare access to the openings before our arrival.
For replacements we dismantle and remove the existing joinery free of charge. We walk you through operation and maintenance.

Aluminum shutters — they do not warp from moisture and salt, come in a wide range of colors and last for decades. Anodized finish helps further in salt air.
Yes. We recommend varnishing every 5–7 years, depending on sun and moisture exposure. Well-maintained wooden shutters last for decades and preserve the traditional look.

They are different names for the same type of product. 'Grilje' is used in Montenegro, 'škure' more often in Croatia. Both describe protective panels with fixed or adjustable louvers.
Yes. Bi-fold systems suit very wide openings, such as large terraces, and are less commonly used in standard residential settings.
They can cover some of the functions — sun protection and privacy. For full black-out and thermal insulation we recommend combining them with roller shutters, especially in bedrooms.
